Concert Choir   Grades 9 through 12.  Year long.  Concert Choir is a performance class.  There are 4 evening performances that are required - one night in December, 2 nights in February and one in May - and one daytime large group contest performance in March.  Students will learn to sing and better read the printed page of music.  Students will learn to work in a team.  Students will perform many different types of music. Projects are also required, but students can choose between African drumming, garage band compositions, power point presentations, guitar and piano lessons.  Solo and ensemble contest and performance opportunities, trips, and festival choirs are all extra curricular opportunities. 

Junior High Choir.  Grades 7 and 8.  Year Long.  Junior High Choir is a performance class.  There are 5 evening performances that are required - one night in December, 2 nights in February and 2 in May.  Students will learn to sing correctly.  Students will learn to work in a team.  Students will learn to sing multiple part harmony and may use African drumming with their songs.  Students will learn about all the components of American Musical theater by performing a musical in May.  Students will perform the group songs of the musical.  Students will be an integral part of auditioning the actors and designing/making/doing the set, the costumes, the public relations, the choreography, the lights and the sound.    An extra curricular component of the junior high musical is also available to students.  If they chose that option, they would have speaking parts, solos and ensembles depending on the role for which they have been cast.    

9th grade general music is required for non-band and non-choir students.  Students of Mrs. Peterson will learn to compose music using Garage Band.  Students will do African Drumming.  Students will learn to play guitar using the basic lessons found in Garage Band on the computer.  Students will learn about legendary musicians from the 20th century in popular music, rock and roll and jazz.  Performance quizes, tests and projects are required.  Students of Mrs. Orpen will learn to play the guitar and read music.   Participation, music theory assignments, written assignments, tests, playing tests and performances are all required for this class.

TITLE:             Jr. High Band

PREREQUISITES:      At least two years of study on a band instrument and/ or audition with instructor. For students in the 7th and 8th grades.

DESCRIPTION:  This course focuses on learning and preparing music of medium easy to intermediate difficulty for performance.  Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory and music history.  Students will take private or group lessons on their instruments.  Students are required to meet practice requirements outside of the classroom.  Students must realize that this class is a year-long commitment.

OUTCOMES:
1. Students will perform at all scheduled concerts/performances.
2. Participation in pep band and solo/ensemble performance is encouraged but not required.

ORGANIZATION:      Year long

TITLE:             Concert Band

PREREQUISITES:   At least four years of study on a band instrument and/or audition with instructor.  For students in grades 9-12.

DESCRIPTION:  The course focuses on learning and preparing music of medium to high difficulty for performance.  Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory and music history and strive for higher levels of musicianship in their ensemble and individual playing.  Students will take private or group lessons on their instruments.  Students must realize this is a year-long commitment.

OUTCOMES:
1. Students will perform with the band at all scheduled concerts and in Large Group Music Contests.
2. Students are required to perform in the pep band.
3. Students are encouraged to participate in solo/ensemble contests.
4. Students may participate in the Jazz Band with the permission of the instructor.
